Welcome to Bridging Doves
Dear Newcomer,
On behalf of our community, I give you a warm welcome to Bridging Doves. Emphasizing adventure and diplomacy, Bridging Doves is the official gaming group for the whitelist-only Bridging community on Discord.
If you are formally joining us for the first time, please read this page in full. It will help you.
Bridging began as my effort to help lower the temperature surrounding the discussion of oftentimes difficult subjects like politics, philosophy, and at times controversial history.
Since its creation, it has evolved into something much greater. The Bridging Discord server today serves a cordial and sophisticated cross-cultural effort to show that we, as peoples of distinct nations and views, share more than we would think; that we're more similar than we are different.
This Bridging Doves gaming group in which you read this book is a novel attribute of the aforementioned cross-cultural effort. It is a cool twist on our established efforts to foster kind-hearted discussion and encourage learning.
This gaming group is, like our broader community and efforts, not meant to be a high-risk, high-stakes thing. Your time here should be relaxing, if we as a community do our jobs right that is. That's where you, as a member, come in.
Most guidelines and rules from the Bridging Discord server carry over in no small part to this gaming group. However, there are innumerable novelties in the guidelines and rules for this Bridging Doves gaming group. When you join, we will take some time to first explain what we are to properly do on a day-to-day basis here. I will also give you some specific pointers as to how the group functions, so we can ensure a positive time for everyone.
Rules
Bridging Doves surrounds the adoption of otherwise very serious topics, but in a more “gaming” form. We are here to discuss and play (literally) with the social sciences and humanities, specifically the fields of history, politics, and culture.
Please remember that Bridging is a community where arguing comes second to bonding. While we have debates, that is second to the central goal of this community to hone in on common ground, and most importantly, to learn from one another. The main way we ensure as many as possible can be welcomed is via an administrative culture here that is "moderate" and "compromising".
Expect intriguing yet sometimes difficult discussions and for your ideas to be challenged. That is a central part of the server. Please remember this.
In discussing serious topics, we try our best to ensure that opposing viewpoints can and will be heard. Nonetheless, good conscience and the need for “basic standards of decency” requires us to take a staunch stand against any spread of willful and malicious misinformation. To put it in simple terms, our characterization of misinformation encompasses things like historical negationism, not historical revisionism. While historical revisionism, an analysis of novelty rooted in reason is acceptable, historical negationism—that is, an utter rejection of reality and fact (for example, genocide denial), is not.
You must remember to use common sense ("good faith") and decent courtesy in your interactions with others here. Hate speech and willful malicious discrimination is prohibited. No harassment: you may jest, but not bully. You’ve to discuss matters like politics and religion respectfully. You can argue against the ideas a person holds (and, if you feel strongly on the matter, are encouraged to do so), but you cannot argue against their humanity. Refrain from stereotyping.
We often use voice chat to help facilitate personalized discussions. Your own utilization of voice chat (“VC”) is not mandatory, but is strongly recommended to ensure you reap the most out of your time on our humble server. A verbal discussion, as opposed to one that is text-based, requires by its very nature more user input. That input helps you engage more thoughtfully with the conversations you will have, and also more strongly affix in your memory what you will learn from others.
On that note, you are not allowed to record others’ voices on this server without their consent.
We do not tolerate extremism here, and we will not allow zealots to spoil proper discussion which hones in on common ground as opposed to hugely dichotomous variables. Extremism, defined in our context as political or state violence and/or the willful malicious suppression of opposing views, is barred from any endorsement or condoning in this server. This is not 4chan.
Mature (e.g. sexual, etc.) content is not allowed in this server.
Don’t start unprovoked combat, especially that which deviates from roleplaying norms. Please, don’t be a jerk.
And for the last of the boring rules, you must please remember to abide by serious orders from staff.
